  A move raises many open questions for your family, especially if your child has cerebral palsy and receives ongoing IV benefits. This Power-up shows you what applies when changing your place of residence within Switzerland: the IV office responsible so far stays in charge until your current procedure is finished. Moving abroad looks different, as shown by the examples of Lilly (Swiss passport), Luis (Italian passport) and Sarah (Colombian passport): depending on nationality and destination country, IV benefits for assistive devices and therapies end faster or slower, but usually right when you deregister in Switzerland. This way you know ahead of time what to expect.

  Moving to another canton

  Are you moving within Switzerland?
  Then the IV office responsible so far stays in charge.
  This applies until your current application is fully processed.

  Moving abroad

  Are you moving abroad?
  Then a lot changes for IV benefits.
  This depends on your child’s passport and the country you’re moving to.

  Example: Lilly

  Lilly has a Swiss passport.
  Even so, her IV benefits end when she deregisters in Switzerland.
  The IV generally doesn’t keep paying for assistive devices and therapies abroad.

  Example: Luis

  Luis has an Italian passport.
  He’s an EU citizen.
  For pensions, there are partly special rules.
  But for assistive devices and therapies, this applies: as soon as residence in Switzerland is given up, the Swiss IV is no longer responsible.
  Then the healthcare system of the new country takes over.

  Example: Sarah

  Sarah has a Colombian passport.
  Colombia has no agreement with Switzerland on this topic.
  That’s why all IV benefits end immediately upon leaving.
  The family has to arrange therapies and assistive devices in Colombia themselves.

  Moving within Switzerland is straightforward for the IV.
  Moving abroad changes a lot.
